Update #2: Amazon MP3 Downloader also suffers from this.
Update #1: Just to preface my pseudo hater rant, I want to absolutely applaud the performance and speed enhancements made in startup and media syncing. iTunes is amazingly faster in this respect with this latest build, thanks.
What's the Dealio?Working for a media company we have integration points to add content to iTunes. One key annoyance, that no one believes could happen, is that iTunes installation on Windows doesn't always install/upgrade itself properly.
I've spent some time investigating this and applications like
eMusic Download Manager,
eMusic Remote,
FoxyTunes and
Amazon MP3 Downloader all suffer from this issue. I haven't been able to figure out what's actually happening but it looks like third party class id's aren't fully configured into the Windows Registry causing the API calls to fail. This has been historically visible with iTunes 7 up to the latest 8.1 release.
Solution? Yes as hokey as this sounds the ONLY solution is to repair or reinstall the same version of iTunes, which may require yet another reboot. This will apparently fix or register all of the Apple iTunes classes and libraries and correct the issue.
The latest build of the iTunes installer now has a Repair/Remove option when re-running the installer, so I'm assuming they've run into this issue, as I have several times over.
My challenge: Hey Apple how the hell can I report this and more specifically how is it that no one in your Quality Assurance team run into this?
