While I'm not a big fan of the bland top level interface, they are fairly justified in some if not most of their speed claims. The core of Safari is WebKit an open source technology that companies like Google are leveraging for Google Chrome. While Google is implementing some core components differently, it would be foolish to ignore Safari at this point.
Update: Safari 4 benchmarked: 42x faster than IE 7, 3.5x faster than Firefox 3, but only marginally faster than Firefox 3.2 test builds --
